Remembrance of Ugandan Environmentalist Heroes on June 5 The World Environment Day

World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 every year to remind people about the importance of nature….. In the absence of human activities amid the coronavirus- induced lockdown, nature getting time to clean itself and reclaim its space.

In Uganda we have so many environmental heroes, some are gone and some are living first and foremost the late Major General Kasirye Gwanga, the hope he brought in the world fighting against environment degradation on Africa’s forests, wetlands, water bodies will never be forgotten  and organization such as Roperfree and Heal the Planet (HTP) shall always feel his love and pride for environment and will always be unforgotten hero who passed on June 9, 2020  and fondly remember his contribution to the UN Environment agenda while making this world better place to live in.

Preserving nature should be everyone responsibility and without natural environment we can’t live in harmony so coexistence is very important tool for our survival while attaining good health.

Sarah Kiyingi Kaweesi an Agro- Entrepreneur Producing Hair Extensions from Banana Fibre 

 

Uganda produces approximately 8 million of tonnes of bananas every year and this is equivalent to 16 million tonnes of banana farming waste which is usually ploughed back in the farms to as act manure and soil health improvement.

 

However, the high quantities of banana farming waste have enabled various innovative businesses to spring up in Uganda that uses banana fibre to make positive social impact with good environment sustainability

 


One the greatest entrepreneur of our generation and the winner of the year in 2020 is Sarah Kiyingi Kaweesa, CEO of Bio Jigsaw Limited who was awarded as the best investor and ranked fist winner in 2020 for the innovativeness behind her business, Sarah based in UK & Uganda with a company in Uganda which is producing organic products made from banana fibre such as; hair weave, wigs Royal Natural Hair Extension (RHNE) a biodegradable natural hair fibre delivered from banana trucks 

Mechanical means are used to extract the coarse banana fibres from its trunk and then soften to produce a smooth texture natural blond color fibre and then dyed into various colors, producing several hair extensions such as; wigs, twisted strands, braids from softened banana fibres.

At the-end-of- life, RHNE is keen to buy back used products from customers for recycling to make new items such as sanitary towers, gypsum boards and papers while contributing to waste reduction and employment creation for banana farmers and women employment in the hair salon business.


 

Many people have contributed to preserve the environment while creating job opportunities in Uganda, to further mention a few; 

Lydia Nakayenze Schubert: founder of OncaPlanta (U) Ltd, based in Germany an agro- entrepreneur  build an international brand that had social development realized when she & her family decided to invest in Nilotica Shea Butter in Northern Uganda by building a factory that supplies high quality shea butter & and acquired land for medicinal tree plants such as; Moriga tree farm in Packwach where has expanded to Moringa Oil under the brand name of Moo Me Gen which means “Oils of hope” and she is scaling her business to include marula and mango butter 


Andrew Bamugye : Based in Zimbabwe is an agribusiness entrepreneur with a passion of African growth  is a  founder and director of Destiny Farms Limited a poultry farm located in Buloba, Andrew leveraged poultry business learned abroad to start his agribusiness farm.


Dr. Emma Naluyima:, She is an a veterinarian and agribusiness entrepreneur : By emulating nature’s cyclical and regenerative processes, Emma farm generates multiple revenue  streams and significantly reduces running cost and waste leading to much higher profits.


Interlocking Stabilized Soil Blocks Appropriate Natural Building Technology:

ISSB bricks made from soil stabilized by cement for construction of buildings, they are cost effective and environmentally friendly so as to preserve our environment the general public is encouraged to embrace this new technology because it is addressing the environmental and economic challenges of traditional burned/ fired bricks for building houses.  Fired bricks cause serious deforestation.

Research by a leading British quantity surveyor concluded that construction costs can to reduce up to 50% and no mortar is required to join bricks it’s just interlocking mechanism, blocks can be made on site preserving the uniformity & shape plus less plastering is needed.

Fighting Malaria Naturally:

Roperfree is fighting malaria naturally while using organic essential oils



 

Uganics Owner and founder Joan Nalubega & business associate is using Organic soap to fight against malaria, at first used to buy essential oils from Roperfree which she used to mix in her mosquito repellent soaps and Roperfree partly mentored and inspired Uganics to produce a unique mosquito repellent soap which is becoming a house hold name to fight against malaria which killing more people than any other diseases in the country.


Fighting COVID-19 Naturally Roperfree was inspired and after one of its directors Phyllis Nakayiza  Kasumba based in Canada innovated hand sanitisers from organic Aloe Vera Moisturizer extracts following the UN guidelines in producing  hand sanitisers to combat the spread of coronavirus and currently she is working another innovative project using Aloe Vera Gel extract to make hair foods.
