Malaria Vaccine Starts In Africa

By Roperfree

According the World Health Organization Malawi has been the first country to begin immunizing children against malaria on April 23, 2019, good news to celebrate on World Malaria Day which takes place on every 25 of April each year using the only licensed vaccine to protect against the mosquito-spread disease.

The vaccine, known as Mosquirix, was developed by GlaxoSmithKline and was approved by the European Medicines Agency in 2015. A previous trial showed the vaccine was about 30 per cent effective in children who got four doses, but that protection waned over time. Reported side-effects include pain, fever and convulsions.

Although the vaccine only protects about one-third of children who are immunized, those who get the shots are likely to have less severe cases of malaria. The parasitic disease kills about 435,000 people every year, the majority of them children under five in Africa.

On the other hand, sometimes it is hard to understand why a trial vaccine which only saves 30 percent of babies and warns of quickly to be allowed as it is not efficient enough to combat malaria and the risks of side effects would take its share, maybe more studies were needed to upgrade the vaccine before its release but time will tell.

According to Alister Craig, dean of biological sciences at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, who is not linked to WHO or the vaccine said” It's an imperfect vaccine but it still has the potential to save tens of thousands of lives by immunizing the most vulnerable children during peak malaria seasons could spare many thousands from falling ill or even dying.”

Roperfree’s experience while doing malaria sensitization campaigns in Uganda which is similar to Malawi the biggest challenges could be convincing parents to bring their children for repeated doses of a vaccine that only protects about a third of children for a limited amount of time.

The vaccine will save some children but other preventative methods should be adopted such as; encouraging the uses of Roperfree mosquito repellents oils which are very effective, high efficacy with no reported side effects plus the mosquito nets, more sensitization campaigns are needed because malaria is preventable disease if all procedures are followed up.

Starting malaria immunization program without sensitizing the masses could cause a negative impact in the long run as the babies’ may show symptoms of malaria and the parents insist that they were immunized and cannot catch malaria, end up going to witchcraft which could cause high malaria mortality rate than anticipated so follow-up by the village healthcare assistants to all immunized babies as to keep track record on their progress including side effects.

Roperfree is providing one of the best viable solutions to fight malaria by encouraging the uses of Roperfree mosquito repellents and also the availability of Roperfree Aromatherapy with pure essential oils to fight rheumatism and skin infections
