Malaria Vaccine Starts in Sub-Saharan Africa

By Roperfree

Malaria, which kills one child globally every two minutes, is the top killer of children under five in the east African country. The vaccine - the worlds first against malaria - will be administered to children under two and could be crucial to efforts to combat the disease, health officials said.

Other measures, such as nets to protect people from the mosquitoes that carry the malaria parasite, have not proven adequate to halt transmission, the director general of Kenya’s health ministry, Wekesa Masasabi, but Roperfree mosquito repellent had not been sought and in Kenya it is promising to be a big market once we get a serious distributor because people’s lives are very important.

According to Wakesa Masasabi’s comments “We still have an incidence of 27% (malaria infection) for children under five,” Masasabi said before Friday’s launch of the vaccine in the western county of Homa Bay.

The Homa Bay programme is the government’s first step toward creating awareness of the new vaccine, he said that the injectable vaccine, called RTS,S or Mosquirix, was developed by British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline to protect children from the most deadly form of malaria in Africa.

African countries have learn to use the preventative tools available to fight malaria before they embark on vaccines which have no good  track record for long time to prove their efficacy and side effects whereas Roperfree is providing a simple solution in saving lives while the products are safe and effective solutions in deterring mosquito bites which should be embraced as first line preventative methods. Africans have to learn and appreciate our own innovations and believe in them rather than depending on foreign solutions which might not be catering for our benefits and existence.
