Uganda Plans To Fight Malaria Using Genetically Modified Mosquitoes

 By Roperfree

The Ugandan government plans to breed genetically-modified mosquitoes as part of a plan to fight malaria in Africa.

To this end Kampala will establish an insectarium, where research on breeding these mosquitoes to spread a genetic mutation that is lethal to its own malaria-causing species will be conducted.

This development will complement the current methods being used to control and prevent the spread of malaria, including anti-malarial drugs and mosquito nets.

Of the 3 000 species of mosquitoes on planet earth, including 800 in Africa, only three species cause malaria.
If the modified mosquitoes are proven to be safe and effective they will be released in areas plagued by malaria across Africa with their mutation eventually sterilizing all the females and subsequently reducing the population of the dangerous mosquitoes.

The research is being carried out by a consortium of several research organizations across Africa, overseen by the United States Agency for International Development and United Kingdom Aid on behalf of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Open Philanthropy Foundation.

On the hand, is Uganda ready for the genetically modified mosquitoes to fight malaria and why have they not tried new intervention tools such as;  Roperfree mosquito repellent oils which saves lives while creating jobs.

In case, the untested genetically modified mosquito in Uganda cause more harm than good in terms of environment and health is the Ugandan government going to take a blame for allowing such a move while there are good & safe interventions in place.

Many countries have eradicated malaria and of more recent; Algeria & Argentina in earlier this year in 2019 were declared by WHO as malaria free countries but they did not use the genetically modified mosquitoes to get zero malaria transmission status.
