Uganda has one of the best climates in the whole world, I have traveled almost all the continents in different countries but I have never seen a country filled with beauty by nature apart from Uganda no wonder Sir. Winston Churchill called it the Pearl of Africa when he visited the country in 1907.

I agree with Mayur Madhvan the proprietor of Madhvan group of companies the leading & the most successful legend business in the east Africa region once upon he said that Uganda will be called the food basket of the world. I can see that happening soon as Uganda now is breeding new young energetic entrepreneurs  maybe I could term them as YUPPIE (Young Urban Professionals or Young Upwardly-Mobile Professionals) who just need guidance, retraining and mentoring then the sky will be the limit.

Losing human lives due to preventable disease like malaria is unacceptable but fighting malaria & rheumatism is similar to my family fighting for entrepreneurship battles, fair trading, good business environment etc, so that others could be better off may be it is in our Kasumba’s gene as my late dad Mr. Eriabu Kasumba fought so much to advance entrepreneurship & businesses in Uganda since the 60’s and many prominent business men/women are the byproduct of young generation.

At AGOA exhibition Roperfree will exhibit one of the best products in the country while conducting malaria sensitization campaign at the Parliament show ground and all members of the public are invited to attend because this will be the chance to know how to market Ugandan products in the USA free tax.

Doing business with one of the most powerful country in the whole world (USA) is a blessing because it cause economic growth, development and reduction of poverty so it an added advantage to country like Uganda, though markets could be attained in USA, the products have to be at the highest standards, from packing, shipment, good communication skills, quality, excellent finishing and not to disregard business integrity. I am pinpoint of this issue because my business associate running Roper fashions on Kampala Plaza, Kampala Road- spent cool $20,000 and started a cottage industry with fabulous interlocking sawing machines to make one of the best Kitengi apparels in Uganda to beat the ones from Ghana & Nigeria but the greatest disappointment struck when the workers could not cope with the standards to make excellent finishing, when I asked the reasons why; the reply was that Ugandans do not want to do work which is straining their minds &brains so the cottage company collapsed & closed down and with cool $20,000 investment just went in dust bin.

How Did AGOA Came About:

The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) is a United States Trade Act, enacted on 18 May 2000 as Public Law 106 of the 200th Congress. AGOA has since been renewed to 2025. The legislation significantly enhances market access to the US for qualifying Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. Qualification for AGOA preferences is based on a set of conditions contained in the AGOA legislation. In order to qualify and remain eligible for AGOA, each country must be working to improve its rule of law, human rights, and respect for core labor standards.

The Act originally covered the 8-year period from October 2000 to September 2008, but legislative amendments signed into law by US President George Bush in July 2004 served to extend AGOA to 2015. At the same time, a special dispensation relating to apparel was extended by three years to 2007; but in December 2006 these were extended to 2012.

In 2007, the apparel “abundant supply” provisions were enacted, although these were repealed again in 2009.

Their intention was to set requirements for local textile fabric sourcing where it was considered that sufficient quantities were available in AGOA-eligible countries; third country fabric (the provisions related only to denim initially) would thus first have to be sourced locally or regionally before third country imports could be utilized for onward exports of denim garments.

A subsequent legislative revision in September 2012 extended the apparel provisions to the end of 2015 to coincide with the current expiry of the AGOA legislation.
