Roperfree is Saving Many lives in Uganda As November Rain is Causing Malaria Cases to Rise
Malaria cases have risen up since the start of
November 2018 due to the rainy season so precautions in malaria prevention is
required such as; clearing shrubs & bushes around the homes or work
premises, cut down the grown lawn, trim overgrown trees, make sure that water drainage
are not blocked, wear long sleeved shirts and trousers, sleep in mosquito nets
& make use of many brands and types of mosquito repellent available to
avoid malaria
In Uganda there are about 6 mosquito repellents on
the market, according to our research and recommendations based from a target
group surveyor carried out by Roperfree ground team last month in October 2018.;
Ø Insecticide
treated bed nets: prone to of misuse, and end users cannot benefit from them
due to allergies and some people especially those working or socializing at
night go to bed when they had already be bitten by mosquitoes so they do not
give maximum protection except when used in combination of repellent body oils, but it is highly recommended that everyone should sleep in the net as to fight malaria more effectively.
Ø Coils:
many people in the rural areas do not have electricity and those with
electricity do not go for them because of the high cost of electricity and
constant power outage, the concern of the fumes they emit deter its usage, can
be fire hazard, consume high voltage of electricity when in use
Ø Candles:
Are fire hazard and unsafe to use at home, and they are not effective when
someone is using the candles outside
Ø Roll-on: User unfriendly, chemical oriented and expensive to buy .Many people do not
know that they exist.
Ø Sprays:
Chemically oriented, expensive and many people do not know whether they exist
in the market
Ø Soap:
Chemically oriented, expensive and many
parts of the country do not have safe water to drink so it hard to find water
for bathing, expensive, not versatile and many people in the rural areas bath
during day light whereas mosquito normally start biting when it is getting
dark, lack of water in the rural area is detrimental to soap usage.
